Sustainability

Mission

We believe that coffee is a people business. We build friendships and create partnerships based on the notion of earning people’s trust.

From the farmers who cultivate and harvest, to the professionals who prepare to the customers who drink our coffee; we look to support & enable the communities in which we work. We believe that as a responsible member of the coffee community it is up to all of us to create a long - term sustainable way of working that benefits all concerned.

Our Journey

At Kafea Terra we believe in a better planet for all. It starts with the actions we have been taking so far and what we plan further down the line. Over the past few years, we have been undertaking our B-Corp accreditation. This rigorous assessment means taking accountability and being responsible for 5 key pillars of social and environmental impacts. We have made many changes over the past few years from which you will see below. We will continue to strive further by committing to our actions. Understanding our impact has never been clearer and by using this data we can take clear steps to consistently improving.

Sustainability Report & B-Corp Information

Coffee

Our coffee processing plant at Kafea Terra is sustainably operated by Brambati. Brambati have put in extensive measures since 2017 to reduce their emissions by 315t. This includes improved process efficiency and technological interventions to equipment performance. Their full sustainability report can be found here

We work closely with the farmers and producers who supply our coffee, building strong relationships based on shared values. Like us, they are deeply committed to sustainability, using the best possible practices and products to protect the natural world around us.

Envar & Podback

As a wholesaler of coffee we are committed to communicating to all our customers that utilising your waste to the best of its ability is important. Envar upcycle waste coffee into sustainable products for reuse. This process can save up to 17x more emissions then putting it to landfill and 5x better then anaerobic digestion. Educating our wonderful customers that this process exists and is far better solution is exactly what we try to encourage.

Podback is also another fantastic initiative that recycles waste coffee pods in the correct way. If coffee pods are put into normal kerbside waste streams, it can contaminate the this. Nespresso set up Podback to provide an easy way to recycle these pods in the correct manner due to their mix of materials.

Our fleet and electricity

Currently half our fleet is our electric and we aim to be fully electric by the end of 2026 considerably lowering our scope 1 emissions. Our office only utilises renewable energy with smart fix tariffs.

OFFSET PROJECTS

Our processes and products become carbon neutral. Our emissions are balanced by an equivalent amount being removed from the atmosphere. Offsetting carbon emissions, in addition to avoidance and reduction, is an important step in holistic climate action.

BUENOS AIRES RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECT:

Buenos Aires Ceramic is a red ceramic factory located in Buenos Aires municipality, in the state of Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil. The ceramic factory produces ceramic bricks and flagstones, mainly for the regional market in Pernambuco. Buenos Aires Ceramic Fuel Switching Project was validated in April 2010 under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Social Carbon Methodology. The project activity is applying for Gap Analysis from VCS and SOCIALCARBON® Standard to Gold Standard via a gap analysis validation. The voluntary project activity avoids GHG emissions by substitution of non-renewable biomass with renewable biomass to generate thermal energy in the process of burning ceramic devices.

OROMIA COOKSTOVE DISTRIBUTION PROJECT:

The Oromia Cook Stove Dissemination Project is a small-scale project activity that will introduce Improved Cook Stoves within the terrestrial boundaries of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. The ICSs shall reduce the non-renewable biomass consumption required to provide thermal energy for domestic cooking requirements.

VICHADA CLIMATE REFORESTATION PROJECT (PAZ):

The climate project is located in the Orinoco Department in Colombia, and its main activity is reforestation. The objective of the project is the creation of close-to-nature forests with the main goal of producing high-quality hardwoods combined with carbon sequestration while stabilising and restoring fragile and degraded areas in an economically, socially, and ecologically viable way. Overall, the climate project objectives are the establishment of profitable production and conservation systems, enabling the enterprise to work in a beneficial way, with the complement of sustainable investment opportunities.

RENEWABLE ENERGY POWER PROJECT BY DDWL

The main purpose of this project activity is to generate a clean form of electricity through renewable wind energy sources. Dev-Dwarka Wind Project Limited is the promoter of the proposed project activity. The project activity involves the installation of a 40 MW wind power project in Gujarat. The project will replace anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG’s) estimated to be approximately 82,220 tCO2e per year, thereon displacing 84,096 MWh/year amount of electricity from the generation mix of power plants connected to the grid, which is mainly dominated by thermal/fossil fuel- based power plant.

CHAIYAPHUM WIND FARM POWER PROJECT:

The project activity is an 80 MW wind power project promoted by Chaiyaphum Wind Farm Co. Ltd. The purpose of the project activity is to generate clean electricity with the utilisation of wind energy. The project will replace anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG’s) estimated to be approximately 73,396 tCO2e per annum, thereon displacing 128,947 MWh/year amount of electricity from the generation-mix of power plants connected to the Electricity Generation Authority of Thailand (EGAT), which is mainly dominated by thermal/fossil fuel-based power plant.
