PAPUA NEW GUINEA, Western Highlands | Sigri Estate

Naturally-processed coffees from Papua New Guinea are quite rare and during the process, only the ripest cherries are used as the amount of time necessary to dry and cure these coffees fully is extensive. After cherries are harvested, they are hand sorted and placed on raised beds for an average period of 3-4 weeks until fully dried

Ripe pineapple, cider wine, mango. Rich mouthfeel, winey aftertaste

Coming from Sigri Estate, Papua New Guinea, this coffee undergoes a meticulous wet factory process, beginning with the careful handpicking of only ripe, red cherries to maintain the perfect balance of sweetness and acidity. After pulping, the cherries undergo a unique three-day fermentation process, with daily washing, followed by an additional day of immersion for a distinctive flavor profile. Subsequent sun-drying further enhances the beans’ flavor before careful conditioning, hulling, grading, and hand-sorting.

Sigri operates the largest coffee plantation in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Founded by a famous crocodile hunter and coffee farmer Tome Cole, it was later sold to WR Carpenters. Located at 1,525 meters above sea level in the fertile Waghi Valley, Sigri spans 122 hectares and is internationally renowned for its high-quality Arabica coffee, including varieties like Typica and Arusha. The volcanic soil and favorable climate provide ideal conditions for farming.
The plantation prides itself on a commitment to organic farming practices, eschewing artificial chemicals, pesticides, and herbicides in the cultivation process.

Environmental stewardship is paramount at Sigri, with a focus on soil, water, and wildlife conservation. The plantation employs a medium-density shade strategy, utilizing specific shade trees to foster even ripening of cherries while providing habitat for over 90 species of birds.

Sigri Plantation also emphasizes in social responsibility. The farm supports local communities by funding schools, churches, and medical facilities. Additionally, contributes to infrastructure development, maintaining roads and bridges for the benefit of the Jiwaka people.
